Success at Jules Verne Park!
On September 17th, 2011, the Nuatilus Hoard came to the Jules Verne Park. Four hours later, The Clean Up at the Jules Verne Park – Ballast Point S. Tampa, became a huge success. Thanks to all the Nauti Members for coming out and helping Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful. We collected bags and bags of trash and divers off the peer including our own Brian M. picked up lots of underwater trash, see the pics http://nautiluskrewe.com/photo-gallery.html.
Thanks to our Site Captains and newest members, Christine and Dan F., who brought us this great event. They have been site captains at Jules Verne Park for many years and invited us this year to participate. To that end, we have officially adopted Jules Verne Park is our park. So there will be many more visits. And to all of our Nauti families, pet owners, boaters and picnic peeps, the park offers an awesome on-site seafood restaurant, playground, dock, shelters and is pet friendly! Hope to see all at our next event there.
Historical Park Note: Mrs. Chester W. Chapin, owner of the company that operated the city’s first electric trolley cars, purchased the park and in 1894, developed the site into tropical park to function as a terminal for her line. She named it for the French writer Jules Verne (1814-1905) who in his famous novel “From the Earth to the Moon” (first published in 1865) chose Tampa town as his launching site for the imaginary shot of his rocket to that planet near one hundred and fifty years ago.

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon LaunchA park and clean-up with our namesake! Jules Verne Park also known as Ballast Point Park is a neighborhood park with a spectacular view of downtown Tampa needs help. September 17th, 2011 has been designated International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) day!
The entire Tampa Bay is the target. We are heading to Jules Verne Park (A.K.A Ballast Point Park and Pier, 5300 Interbay Blvd). Our two newest Nautilus Members, Dan & Christine Fisher, have been assigned to be site captains at Jules Verne Park.
Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful coordinates the local sites in the Hillsborough County area for this annual event. We will clean the park, bay front area, and pier of marine debris that can sicken, injure, or kill marine mammals, sea turtles and birds that ingest it or get entangled in it.
In addition, the Fishers have also coordinated with the Florida Aquarium divers to conduct a dive cleaning of the Ballast Point Pier on the same day, to support Project Aware’s Dive Against Debris.
We encourage all Krewe members to come and volunteer for the park cleanup. Drop an E-mail to Christine (scubachris9@yahoo.com), before September 7th, with the names and shirt sizes of the volunteers. The cleanup will be Saturday, September 17th, 8:30- noon. Check-in is at 8:00am. The park may be under construction, so look for the signs (they are doing improvements to the playground, including an interactive splash pad fountain, popular with children). Bring work gloves, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, protective footwear (close-toed), and insect repellant. Everything else will be provided.

The 1Voice Foundation wishes to thank the Krewe of the Nautilus for all their hard work in making the 5th annual Quest 4 Hope Scavenger Hunt, on May 14th, the most successful to date, with raising $15,000.00 for children battling cancer and their families! In partnership with the Florida Aquarium, funds raised will be used for our Family Support Services which include our collaborative program with the Florida Aquarium. A special thank you to Minesh, Tracy, Leslie and April for all the planning and behind the scene logistics, which are required of such an amazing event! It could not be done without the assistance of all the Krewe members who volunteered at each venue and enthusiastically greeted the teams.
You make the event and it is much appreciated. We also thank the Krewe members who put teams together or sponsored teams for others to participate. Thank you also to our friends at Creative Recycling Services and Geico for their sponsorships again this year.

Thanks to all the krewe members for volunteering for the 22nd Annual Hillsborough River & Waterways Cleanup. We were at the Cypress Park near the airport, but the effort was Hillsborough county and city wide. This year they had 1,300 volunteers participate in the annual event. Volunteers removed five tons of garbage, 25 tons of invasive plants, and marked 200 stormdrains in five Tampa neighborhoods. The successes of the Mayor’s Beautification Program are those in which we can all take pride and would not be possible without your contribution. Again, thank you for your support in making this annual event such a success!
