On April 21st, members of the Ye Mystic Krewe of the Nautilus participated in Great American Clean-up day. They spent the morning cleaning Jules Verne Park in South Tampa and picking up hundreds of pound of garage. Even our little nautilites joined the charge. There were divers from the Aquarium and USF dive club and scores of other volunteers diving around the pier picking up even more garabage. It was a good day. And we capped it off with cool suds at Mad Dogs!

Are you wondering what to do with the old one? Rather than adding it to your growing collection of unwanted mobile phones, recycle it! In 2007, approximately 14 million Americans recycled their used cell phones. Today, donating or recycling cell phones, PDAs, chargers, and batteries has never been easier. Donating your working cell phone or PDA can benefit your community. When cell phones and accessories are in good working order, some programs donate them to worthy charities or sell them at a discount to those in need.

Recycling cell phones helps the environment by saving energy and keeping usable materials out of landfills. Cell phones and PDAs are made of precious metals, copper, and plastics-all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. Recycling conserves these materials so they can be turned into new products.

Where Can I Turn in My Cell Phone for Donation or Recycling?

Cell phone collection programs can be accessed from almost everywhere in the US. Many organizations, such as cell phone manufacturers, retailers, network carriers, charities, and state or local solid waste programs offer cell phone donation and recycling programs.

It started off with some cool blues and jazz sung by a lady and gentlemen combination with awesome Italian Hors d’oeuvres, while we talked old times. We all marched off to the private dining room and was surprised to see a solo opera singer serenading us as we entered the room. The Donatello Italian Restaurant was truly a great experience! The food was awesome and in such generous portions that we were stuffed so much we could have used Joey pants.

This was followed by a presentation by Minesh and awards ceremony. Our year end accomplishments included the formal adoption of Jules Verne Park (in South Tampa also known as Ballast Point Park), Quest for Hope donation to the 1 Voice Foundation and Florida Aquarium of $15,000 and plans for more clean-ups and habitat restoration projects with the Florida Aquarium and more awesome new members. It looks to be a great 2012 year!

And of course, we honor those who have contributed much time and energy to the cause. Congratulations to the following:

We woke up bright and early with coffee and smoothies in hand and took the Aquarium Yacht to Fantasy Island. The island is a 3 acre man-made island in the upper Tampa Bay. Popularly known as Fantasy Island, this piece of land is an offshoot of two main spoil islands (islands created by the deposition of dredged bay bottom for shipping channels). Over time, the island had become overrun with exotic vegetation. The Florida Aquarium is engaged in restoration and enhancement activities to create a stand-alone, functioning educational tool for interpreting native local habitats. Microhabitats such as inter-tidal zones, upland scrub, mangrove forest and salt marsh were created and installed in representation of the types that make up the bay. A covered pavilion, boat dock, and interpretive signage were installed to create a “living classroom” where educational programs are presented. On Saturday, we rolled up our sleaves and got to work. We hit the island hard successfully completing the following:

• Trash and Fishing Line Removal
• Removed Non-Native Plants
• Erect a Bat House
• Repaired Educational Signs

The benefits of our day included:

• Habitat Restoration
• Conservation Education
• Public Awareness
• Shore line clean-up

After the event, the boat took us on a tour of the bay for some dolphin watching and sight seeing. Thanks to all who came out for the event and thank you Florida Aquarium for hosting us!
